Why this book and why now?

This book was originally created to showcase a mature lesbian lead within a series that pay homage to women of color lesbians within various age groups. But as I documented Yvette Leigh-Dixon’s journey towards an awakening, and I was also going through my own as a 53-year-old lesbian, peremenopausal woman, with a recent hysterectomy, and family and friend deaths. As my character’s challenges of growing older and turning 60 years old as a widow were being penned in this novel, I was sharing similar woes and ultimate triumphs. I can only thank God for giving me the comfort and wisdom to write this novel, when I needed it the most. Because of my own healing and true enjoyment from this story, I know that other women in my age group and even younger or older, will find joy, comfort, and inspiration in this short story.

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

It’s become a celebration of life and aging rather than a mere assignment to add a mature character to the series. When I started writing the short story, I was struggling with growing old, and found the creation of the book a constant reminder of just how unhappy aging can be. But as I continue Yvette Leigh-Dixon’s journey and my own, the book became more of a celebration for our maturity and resilience and passion as women. No matter what our ages are, we can get our groove back and have a hell of a journey towards self-love and new love.

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Oh my God, Yvette is a Hallmark Romance channel junkie! She loves those sweet, romantic movies. They are her companions and the perfect way to end her day along with a cup of Earl Grey.

One of your main characters is planning a romantic night. Tell us about it.

Hmm. Well, since Yvette is becoming more adventurous, it would definitely be something so out of her normal character. I think she’d listen to her Pisces horoscope and be the femme fatale that’s hiding deep inside. She’d take her lover to a romantic but mysterious underground hideaway where she’d unleash her most forbidden desires on said lover. Yvette has been passive in her romances of the past, this new version of her would definitely want to be on top with a few BDSM accoutrements to really get her lover hot and bothered!

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.

That’s super easy! Pina Colada. Yvette loves a sweet, fruity drink. Once she was introduced to the tropical, sweet flavors of a Pina Colada, she’s been hooked, and orders it everywhere she goes.

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

Her favorite. “Neva Felt This Way” by Tweet. Because it reminds her of the sweetest times she’s shared with a lover, and it resonates with the way she’s feeling.
