Why this book and why now?
This book is the third book in the noir-inspired Shadow series. All the tension and mystery of the first two books unwind in book three as revelations spill and life-changing truths come to light. Readers were getting a little restless waiting for this one, so I am very excited to release the continuation of Kathryn and Jenny’s story.
What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?
When I started writing the first book in this series (In the Shadow of the Past), it was just a little uber fanfic that I wrote for myself. A story I would love to read. As I wrote, the story got bigger and bigger, until finally, it was unrecognizable as the little fanfic, and it became something that I felt was publishable (which was something I had never thought about before). I got serious about writing. I learned about story structure, research, and craft, and developed the manuscript into a proper novel, or series of novels, as it turned out. So my little fanfic that could, is now all grown up as a series, complete with audiobooks narrated by none other than Abby Craden! Never in a million years did I imagine any of it.
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
They would binge watch the new A League of Their Own because it takes place in their era, and hello, women’s professional baseball! Then they would march over to Amazon Prime and rattle some cages because … #renewALOTOnow
What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?
Kathryn’s favorite book is Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier because she is right at home with moody, psychological melodrama. Jenny’s favorite book is The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. The small novella’s philosophical themes of loneliness, love, loss, and the innocence of childhood, are just … so Jenny.
Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.
Jenny raises a toast with a glass of scotch. It’s her drink of choice, and honestly, she’s going to need it.
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
Kathryn puts on “Like the Moon Above You” by Harry James with Kitty Kallen on vocals. It’s an uplifting swing song with a brilliant trumpet solo in the middle, and she needs all the uplifting she can get!
