Author Rita Potter recommends Just for Show by Jae

Welcome to Authors Getting Rec’d! Each week, we’ll bring you a new sapphic book recommendation from a favorite sapphic author. Find out what authors are reading and why, plus read about the personal connections between authors and books.

This week, Rita Potter, who was mentored by Jae during her time in the GCLS Writing Academy, explains why Just for Show is a must read.

Rita had never read anything from Jae until she saw her on a GCLS panel during the virtual conference in 2020. Rita was intrigued by Jae’s intelligence and decided to try a few of her books. This one turned out to be a favorite. She was blown away, and proceeded to buy them all. This sapphic contemporary romance novel has has one of Rita’s favorite tropes and an irresistible blurb.

Let’s hear more from Rita about why Just for Show is a must read:

For me, it was the characters that made the book. I loved Claire and Lana’s quirks, and I am a sucker for a good fake romance. The other thing I loved was the emotional chemistry that Jae built between the characters. Note, I said emotional chemistry, which I find much more “sexy” than sexual chemistry.

Rita Potter is the author of Whitewater Awakening, which is the first book Rita wrote after being mentored by Jae

Here’s Rita to tell us more:

This the first book I wrote after Jae mentored me during my time at the GCLS Writing Academy, or as I like to say, after I was Jae’d. I call it Jae’d because she will forever sit on my shoulder whenever I write. I literally received a masterclass from one of the best in the business. Imagine, having Jae not only read your manuscript, but give you thirty-eight pages of feedback. Yes, I said thirty-eight pages, plus making tons of suggestions in the document itself. The wide-eyed look of my GCLS instructor, when I mentioned the lengthy feedback, was priceless. I think they feared that I would fall apart or burst into tears, so they were relieved when I didn’t. I was beyond stoked. I had thirty-pages of wisdom to make me a better writer. How could I be anything but grateful?

I still remember the letter I received from Jae concerning how she, as a German, gave feedback. She explained that her feedback tended to be more blunt and direct and not heaped with praise, so I should take any praise given and multiple it by ten. Every time I came across something she liked in my manuscript, I would chuckle to myself and multiply it by ten. So, Whitewater Awakening is the culmination of everything I learned from Jae. I hope my work will make her proud, and she will consider being my mentor one of her many accomplishments as a writer.

Here is how you can connect with Rita Potter:

Rita Potter finds her inspiration from the quote, “The writer’s job is to get their main character up a tree, and then throw rocks at them.” She draws heavily on her background in social work to ensure her characters struggles are authentic, while still infusing her stories with hope.
