TB’s Marketing Tip: Joint promotions

For Authors
TB here to chat about joint promotions.

I’m often asked how I came up with the concept for this website. Way back in 2016, I moved to Dublin for my partner’s work. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to secure a work permit, meaning I couldn’t publish anything new while residing in Dublin. The one bright point was I was still allowed to earn royalties on previously published books.

With that in mind, I started organizing joint promotions with fellow sapphic authors. The more people I asked to get involved, the less fair it seemed to direct everything through my personal author website, so I decided to create a new site that had a broader sapphic fiction focus.

That’s how the I Heart SapphFic website came into being, but the experience also taught me the power of joining forces with other authors. During my 18 months in Dublin, I organized sales to keep my backlist humming, while also keeping my name in front of readers. Some of those readers already knew me, but not all of them did. Even though I couldn’t publish, my reader base grew. This is the best part of taking part in joint promotions. The goal is to have all the authors share it with their readers, which in turn can broaden your own readership along with helping the other authors reach new audiences as well.

Sometimes a reader may want to try one of your books, but since they don’t know you, they may not be willing to pay the full price. Sales make it easier for a reader to try a book by an unfamiliar author, and if they like the book, it increases the chances they’ll dip into your backlist.

After moving from Dublin in 2017, I could once again publish new books, but I had seen too much proof about how successful joint sales could be to even consider giving up organizing sales. They’re a lot of work, but the benefits to me and all authors make them valuable.

The 2022 Mega Sale just finished yesterday, November 29th. The sale pages received over 15,000 hits!
