Why this book and why now?
I recently realized that I gravitate toward books with the hot boss (both straight and sapphic romances) and the single parent trope, so I thought I’d combine them with a little twist. As always, the original ideas for this book morphed quite a bit as the story came together, and this became—in addition to being a romance—a fairly complex and layered commentary on power dynamics in the workplace.
What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?
I had intended to make Richard (Sarah’s boss / Carmen’s dad) out to be the bad guy, but he turned out to be a sweetheart. I hadn’t planned on this book becoming a statement on power dynamics in the workplace, but it ended up that way, with lots and lots of layers—and not only with men being at the top of that unwanted power dynamic.
On a lighter note, Lily ended up being a force to be reckoned with and a super sassy 12-year-old. Some of the things that she says and does cracked me up, had me scratching my head, and scrambling to figure out how Sarah and Carmen would deal with her.
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
Sarah binge watches documentaries all the time, because she is an information junkie and likes to always be learning about new things—mostly about science and technology related to architecture. Thankfully, Carmen has a little more interesting taste. She likes to watch legal shows, especially The Good Wife, because she likes to understand how the law and the justice system works.
What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?
Sarah, always serious, likes to read non-fiction, mostly about productivity and new technologies. Carmen, on the other hand, loves to curl up with a steamy romance. She’s a pretty serious person when it comes to her own business, but outside of work, she likes to let her hair down and relax with a great love story.
Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.
Carmen’s long-time BFF Olivia is a wine connoisseur, and often gifts Sarah and Carmen with expensive bottles for special occasions. Sarah is a wine snob, and only the best will make her happy! For this celebration, they are bringing out a bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild to celebrate with all their friends!
