Why this book and why now?
The first spark of an idea for this story came about a few years ago when a spider nest hatched in my bathroom, leaving me screaming as a thousand creepy-crawlies scuttled up my wall. After I calmed down, I joked that I must have been cursed by a witch… and then immediately became inspired to write. I wrote a short story about bringing cursed items to an attractive witch as an excuse to see her again, and my husband had funny ideas about some not-so-cursed kitchen appliances the protagonist could bring her. What started as a fun idea about curses turned into an entire novel about a secret coven! The novel has been brewing in my mind for a few years, and I had to put it off because of other publishing contracts, so I’m super happy I finally got to write it and get it out into the world.
Would you and your main character(s) get along?
Absolutely. We’re both bisexual disasters, we’re both introverts, interested in psychology, have a soft spot for animals, good relationships with our families… we have a lot in common.
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
Of course it has to be Agatha All Along because of the lesbian witches.
One of your main characters is planning a romantic night. Tell us about it.
Since Katie and Natalie don’t get a chance to have a normal relationship and go on any normal dates, they have to get creative for romance. In this date planned by Natalie, she sneaks Katie into her room, where she set up a candlelit dinner (takeout from a fine dining restaurant in Vancouver). She’s used magic to give the room a romantic atmosphere, including lots of flowers, and soft music plays from a vintage record player. After dinner, they slow-dance. They could also watch a movie on her laptop… but I think they’ll have other activities in mind by this point.
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
Total Eclipse of the Heart – though tbh Katie and Natalie are probably both still traumatized by what happened the last time they heard that song. Still, it’s fitting to play it during the launch party, since it was playing during a moment that changed everything.
