Here are Alysia’s top sapphic reads of 2024:
1. You Had Me at Merlot by Melissa Brayden
I was blown away by the balanced perspectives of the two main characters in terms of their professional lives and desire to be good humans. It is rare that I find that I truly relate to the characters in a book, but I felt like these were two I’d love to have as friends or colleagues. While they had a major misunderstanding, their chemistry was unstoppable and they could maturely work through it.
2. Aubrey McFadden Is Never Getting Married by Georgia Beers
This was the book I could not stop listening to for work, for sleep, for adulting…it was so engaging! It was funny, it was heart wrenching, it was stressful, and it was delightful. All of those weddings were torment…until they weren’t!
3. Iona Iverson’s Rules for Commuting by Clare Pooley
This was the best written book I read this year. The characters are all quirky and vivid, and never who they first appeared to be. The book is full of surprises, as each character who interacts with the next learns more about the other and themselves. This is the ultimate “never judge a book by its cover” novel! It drew me in right away and took me on a rollercoaster of emotions…I laughed and cried throughout and loved every surprise along the way!
4. Here We Go Again by Alison Cochrun
An amazing road trip adventure where everything goes wrong, but in some way, it also goes right. The story involves an emotional journey for two women who find that life isn’t quite all they expected it to be, supporting someone who left an indelible mark on their lives, as he battles terminal illness. It is very funny, but will also make you ugly cry. This was the best sapphic fiction tearjerker of the year for me.
5. The Snowball Effect by Haley Cass
If you’ve read and loved any novel by Haley Cass, then you will love this novel. This is the long-awaited story of Emma and Regan, without Sutton, and how their relationship comes to be. You will be squirming in your seat, waiting through the long, slow burn, but it is worth it. Haley Cass is a master storyteller!
