Why this book and why now?
I was thinking about doing a special edition of my previous book, The Escort’s Endgame, which is told wholly from the POV of my MC Miri. Miri undergoes a few trials & tribulations along the way to meeting Caroline Séjour. She’s European cinema’s next big thing and right on the cusp of breaking out internationally. She’s also Miri’s secret crush. And not yet out. I never intended for Miri and Caroline to feel so intensely about each other and for the story to end where it did.
In fact, Caroline really resonated not only with Miri but me too, so I decided to flip her and Miri’s scenes in the previous book, rewritng them from Caroline’s POV to give the events and emotions an entirely fresh dynamic. And then add Caroline’s backstory AND treat readers to “what happened next” after her and Miri’s HEA. I very much enjoyed writing their moonlight date on the streets of Rome in the book’s final part.
Did any real-life events or personal experiences influence the story?
Mm, yes. The scene in the library at school. The homophobia. That happened to me.
What’s one fun fact about your book that most people wouldn’t know?
Most readers might not know that Caroline, being French, is actually pronounced “Caroleen.” I do sorta give that away in a fake newspaper rhyming headline.
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
Oh gosh, Miri has most certainly devoured the entire series of The L Word! And Gentleman Jack. Caroline loves movies but doesn’t really binge watch many TV shows. One she probably did see is Spiral (in French, L’Engrenages), a long-running French police/legal show. I’m sure she’d jump at the chance to play the lead if they remade that show.
What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?
Patricia Highsmith’s “The Price of Salt” (“Carol”). Caroline needs the hope the ending offers.
If your book were to be adapted into a movie or TV show, who would be your dream cast?
For Miri, Jessica Chastain (please, please!). Caroline… hmm… maybe Alice Isaaz? (Google her and fall in love—beware!)
Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.
Both girls enjoy a crisp Chardonnay, but for a book release (or movie premiere)… anyone for Champagne? (YOLO)
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
Fleetwood Mac’s “Looking Out for Love.” Up-tempo energy and let’s say “fun” sounds at the end.
If your book had a scent, what would it smell like?
Maybe YSL Opium? Apparently Opium “is known for its opulent and decadent scent, described as luxurious, sensual, provocative, and bewitching. It’s a long-lasting perfume with a spicy character.” If my book is ever described as that, I’ll be happy!
If your book had a signature dessert, what would it be?
Crème brûlée. Both girls have necessarily needed to wear and project harder shells to the world but are very warm and yummy inside.
Do you outline your books in detail, or do you prefer to discover the story as you write?
I outline the main events and beats, but then I write organically and non-linearly, filling in and connecting back and forth as I go. That freedom helps spark my creativity (usually in the shower!).
Who are your biggest literary influences?
Charles Dickens, David Nicholls, Lee Winter, Roslyn Sinclair… to name a very few.
What are you currently reading?
Laura Pearson’s The Many Futures of Mady Hart
If you could have dinner with any author, living or dead, who would it be?
Um, easy… Charles Dickens. I’d love to find out how he came up with the idea for his 3 ghosts in A Christmas Carol.
