Why this book and why now?

One of the themes of this book is the treatment of Greenlanders in Denmark. During Trump’s first term, when he first voiced the idea of the US acquiring/taking over Greenland, there was a lot of talk in the media and on SoMe about whether or not Greenlanders were treated badly in Denmark. So many people denied that there’s anything to this. That is an absolute fabrication. As a former prosecutor and just… Danish citizen, I know that there’s lots of anti-Greenland bias in Denmark because I’ve seen it. That’s what inspired this book.

Would you and your main character(s) get along?

I’d get along great with both Eva. Charlotte would scare the shit out of me at first, but once I got to know her, we’d have a lot in common.

Do your character names have special significance or meaning?

It’s funny because I’ve seen a lot of people complain that there’s a lot of ‘Charlottes’ in sapphic books, probably because in America it sounds fresh and stylish. That’s not true in Denmark. Eva and Charlotte are both typical millennial mom names and therefore age appropriate for the eighties. Kind of like naming them Debbie and Linda in an American setting.

Did any real-life events or personal experiences influence the story?

So many. As part of a former job I had to go through many of the documents regarding the sinking of the Hans Hedtoft Greenland ship. Every one of Charlotte’s criminal cases are inspired by a case I’ve prosecuted myself. The scandalous death that occurs in the story is inspired by a true death of a man I once prosecuted. It’s a book that’s very close to my heart for those reasons.

How does it feel to finally share this book with readers?

Great! I think a lot of readers will love the black cat/golden retriever dynamics between Eva and Charlotte. They’re both sweet and funny together.

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Definitely some crime show. Neither Eva or Charlotte are the types to leave work at work.

What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?

Charlotte’s favorite is some sort of law book. Probably one on the European Convention of Human Rights. Eva reads a lot of Sjöwall and Wahlö crime mysteries.

One of your main characters is planning a romantic night. Tell us about it.

Eva is definitely the romantic of the two. She would go all in to make Charlotte happy. She would probably get Quality Street chocolate to remind her of their second one night stand. She would latch onto some little thing Charlotte once mentioned about her childhood in foster care and she would make some plan to make up for it. Maybe Charlotte has never been to Tivoli, so Eva takes her there and lets her win all the carnival games because she knows Charlotte is wildly competitive.

Which character do you relate to the most, and why?

Charlotte because I’ve done both of her jobs myself, although I’m not nearly as fearless as her.

Which character was the most fun to write, and which was the hardest?

Charlotte was both the most fun and the hardest. She has a tough, witty exterior but she’s hurting on the inside. She’s a true survivor and I honestly love her as a character.

If you could spend a day with one character from the book, who would it be and why?

Eva because I always wanted to go on a police ride along for a day (in Denmark preferably, where the stakes are a bit lower than in the US).

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

Well, Eva is a Madonna fan, so maybe “Get Into the Groove.”

If your book had a scent, what would it smell like?

It would smell like beer breath and unwashed bodies lol.

If your book had a signature dessert, what would it be?

The only right answer is Quality Street! The red strawberry-filled chocolates specifically.

Do you outline your books in detail, or do you prefer to discover the story as you write?

I’m somewhere in between. I have an idea where the book is going and how it’s going to end, but I don’t outline in detail.

Were there any books, movies, or personal experiences that influenced this story?

My own experience as a prosecutor with the Copenhagen Police.

Do you have any writing rituals or habits?

No. I just sit down with my computer and do it. I have kids so I just need to get going when I have the time.

Who are your biggest literary influences?

Isabel Allende, Kiran Millwood Hargrave, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Sara Waters.

What are you currently reading?

So many things because I’m scattered, but I’m trying to stick with The Counterpart by Ruby Landers. Next up is Windburn by Milena McKay.

If you could have dinner with any author, living or dead, who would it be?

Isabel Allende. She just seems like the nicest person and she’s lived such an interesting life.
