5 Random Things is our way of helping readers to get to know top sapphic book authors all the while having a bit of fun.

Here are five random facts about Zuri Amara.

1. While touring Egypt, I touched the Sphinx. We were with the Director of Antiquities of Egypt, who gave our group special permission to go inside the gates, and the other tourists were furious because we ruined their photos.

2. I earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, which required running 100 miles over ten weeks, daily strength training, forms, kicks, punches, teaching classes, tutoring a student, overnight testing from 6 PM to 6 AM, and breaking two bricks with a single punch. It took three years, and I was in the best shape of my life when I finished.

3. While hiking with the National Outdoor Leadership School for 30 days, in the Absaroka–Beartooth Mountain Range, I slipped while rappelling down a cliff and hung upside down midair for a full minute. I laughed the entire time because it proved all the safety systems worked, while my belayer cried hysterically until I reached the ground.

4. When I get scared or overwhelmed, I still think about the day I fell off a cliff and didn’t die. It reminds me that fear doesn’t mean failure, and that sometimes you just hang there, breathe, and trust the rope.

5. I served on the Crisis Intervention Unit of a police department, working primarily with women who were victims of violent crime. That experience permanently shaped how I understand trauma, resilience, and the quiet bravery of survival. I write love stories about Black women who survive hard things and still choose tenderness, joy, and each other. Secrets exists because some stories refuse to stay quiet.

Before buying a “free” book, please ensure it’s free in your marketplace. Amazon has a habit of changing the price of permafree titles in stores outside of the US. Please know this it out of the author’s control and we are unable to check prices in all Amazon stores.

Some of the books are only free today, March 13, 2026, so don’t miss out!

Pet of the Week!

Meet Nirvana! She’s the inspiration for a character’s familiar in my Lost Witches of Hecate series coming out this year. Her favourite expression actually IS WTF lol.  Submitted by Neen Cohen, a sapphic author.

Today’s post is also sponsored by Brenda Murphy. Please check out Cryofactory Cryptid.

QUEER NEWS THAT’LL MAKE YOU SMILE

It can seem sometimes like all the news these days is bad. We won’t deny there’s a lot of troubling things going on, including a rise in hate crimes. But it’s not all terrible out there! We want to do our best to highlight good news, because while it may seem like the world is filled with hate, there are many individuals who are living their best lives with a rainbow in their heart.

This week’s good news involves Idaho.

Let’s get the bad out of the way first. Idaho is trying to overturn gay marriage. It’s okay to gnash your teeth in frustration. However, 17 Republicans voted against the measure this year. That’s 3 more Republicans in 2026 than in 2025.

One Republican who changed his mind said, “I thought we advanced [House Joint Memorial 1] last year,” adding, “This year, to me, it’s just going to cause hurt and pain and I don’t want to do that.”

It’s progress!

Read about it here.

That’s all for today.

Wishing all of you a wonderful Friday!
