It seems like every time we read the news LGBTQ+ rights are under attack someplace. Yet, we always hear wonderful stories from queer people about how amazing the country, state, city, town, neighborhood, or cabin in the woods where they live really is.
This year’s IHS reading challenge will focus on books set in different parts of the world. We think it’s vital to show that sapphic people not only exist but are everywhere.
We also want to hear from authors and readers about where they live. If you’d like to share your experiences, click here for the interview form.
Today, Donna/Luke is here to tell us about Sacramento (area) California.
Where in the world will you be taking us today?
Sacramento (area) CA
Tell us in one sentence what’s so special about living in this place.
The Sacramento area is a perfect blend of urban, suburban and rural communities nestled between metropolitan San Francisco and the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
How long have you lived there? Or, if you no longer live in this place, how long were you there and when did you leave?
I’ve lived in the area since 1987 after growing up on the east coast. I feel like I’ve grown up along with the city.
What is/was it like being a sapphic (or LGBTQ+) person living in this place?
The sapphic/LGBTQ+ community is multi-faceted where everyone can find something that fits their interests. I have found the education community to be welcoming and forward-thinking.
What about living in this place gives you hope?
Our youth in general embrace everyone, regardless of identity. They are our future and many are stepping up to take on leadership roles in their schools and local communities.
Are there any challenges to living in this place, either as a queer person or more generally?
Like any community, some view the LGBTQ+ community as one not deserving of respect, open to ridicule and occasionally personal attack. The fight continues for all of us and we grow stronger by joining hands with our allies.
For someone who has never been there, what’s the one thing that they must see or do if visiting your area?
There is so much to be seen but first time visitors must experience Sacramento’s role in the history of the western US. Tour the original street level in Old Sacramento (now underground), visit the California Train Museum, and experience river tours on foot or by boat.
What’s the one type of regional food and/or drink they absolutely must try?
Many in northern California would say wine, but I advocate the many amazing craft brewers within 20 miles of downtown Sacramento. If you are a beer connoisseur, you need to drink here!
Do you have a favorite local restaurant? What makes it special?
I love most ethnic food and my favorite is Bombay Bar and Grill downtown.
Meet Donna/Luke
I’ve lived on both sides of the US and traveled a lot as well, meeting amazing people. These days it’s easy to get discouraged but as the ultimate optimist, I look for the best everywhere I go and in every person I meet. I challenge each of you to make a new friend, get them to smile, and share a bit of yourself. The world will be a better place for our efforts.
