Why this book and why now?

Catch the Wind concludes my Balsam Inn series, which is set in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, where much of my family is from and where I spent a lot of my childhood. I knew I wanted to set a book in this area someday, and after moving to the UK a couple years ago, moments of homesickness inspired me to write stories that could take my back home whenever I wanted to visit, as well as give me the opportunity to share a place I love with my readers.

Did any real-life events or personal experiences influence the story?

One of my favourite scenes in the book is when the entire staff of Balsam Inn (the bed & breakfast this series is set at) go tubing on the river in a town called Huberdeau. This is a real town I would visit with my family almost every summer growing up. There’s a huge sandbar on the river that everyone wades out to and spends the day hanging out, having picnics, and playing around in the water. I loved getting to depict such a special memory in this story, and it was the perfect place for the heroines to have their first kiss!

Is there anything you wish readers knew before diving into this book?

While this is the last in a three-book series, Catch the Wind can absolutely be read as a standalone! I like to write a series that readers can dive into at any point, so if Maddie and Marie-Ève’s story is calling to you the most, you can always go back and read the books that follow her best friends Natalie and Jacinthe next. The whole Balsam Inn gang would love to meet you!

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

There actually is a binge-watching scene in this story! Maddie, one of the heroines, loves sci-fi and fantasy. She’s a huge Doctor Who fangirl, so when she find out her love interest, Marie-Ève, has never seen the show, they hunker down for an afternoon Doctor Who crash course that leads to a pretty steamy ending between the two of them 😉

If your book were to be adapted into a movie or TV show, who would be your dream cast?

As both heroines are French-Canadian, I would love to see Québécois actresses cast to play them. Sara Montpetit would be my top pick for Maddie, and I think Liliane Skelly would be a great Marie-Ève.

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.

Given how many scenes in this series take place in the local small town bar, I’d have to go with a craft beer from Québec!

If your book had a scent, what would it smell like?

Catch the Wind would smell like pine needles and fresh grass in the sunshine. That’s always how I imagine stepping out onto the porch at Balsam Inn would smell.

Do you have any writing rituals or habits?

I’m not sure if it counts as a ritual, but I have a weird writing device that I do all my first drafts on. It’s called an Alpha Smart. I know of at least a few other authors who love them as well. They went out of production over a decade ago, so they’re a little hard to get your hands on, but if a low-tech, distraction-free solution sounds like your kind of thing, I definitely recommend checking them out.

What are you currently reading?

I am currently reading The Full Moon Cafe by Mai Mochizuki. It’s a really cute magical realism story about a mysterious cafe run by astrologically gifted cats. Adorable!
