Why this book and why now?

Growing up, English classes were some of the only ones I ever enjoyed. Beyond that, I didn’t know I had this love of writing until becoming obsessed with one show in 2022 led me to fanfic. My early work was……not refined, but I loved writing it and engaging in the fandom. Everyone was SO supportive. This book started as a VERY alternate universe fanfic story. I was writing canon material and asking for prompts, and more than one person asked if I would write an AU. I didn’t know what to write about exactly, so I stuck with what I knew, and wrote characters that were personal to me; either people I knew, or parts of me, or pieces I wished were part of me. I wrote their work and lives based on careers and hobbies that I, myself had/have. Before I could blink, I had over 120,000 words written. I loved the project so much, and so many people encouraged me to seek out publishing. So, I pulled the whole story out of the fandom (which was easy enough because it was already very different than the show), and The Love Language Series was born. None & Then Some of You is part one of what I hope will be at least a 4 – 5 part arc!

Would you and your main character(s) get along?

Yes and no! There is so much of me in these pages and in these women that it makes me love parts of my MCs, but also hate them a little!! Shaking my head at my protagonist while they are actually, mostly me, is a weird form of therapy…

Did any real-life events or personal experiences influence the story?

So many real-life aspects of me and my history are embedded in this story. I, myself have struggled with getting out of my own way in some of the ways Riley does. CJ’s dogged pursuit of that which feels good has led me down some…interesting paths in my own life. Riley’s career as an ASL interpreter turned teacher is very personal to me and my own journey with ASL.

How does it feel to finally share this book with readers?

I’m so excited and nervous to share this story with readers. I hope that the self-discovery these ladies go through resonates with people. I hope the intimacy and passion they share moves people, and I hope their banter/chemistry makes people want to read more!

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Riley would choose Killing Eve. (All that unspoken everything). CJ would pick A League of Their Own because it’s unapologetically queer and found family focused, like she is.

What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?

Each of my leading ladies would need their dogs, 100%. CJ would probably also want a big stock pot to cook up whatever she can find on the island, and a solar powered music setup. Riley would want a bathtub full of sunscreen and some kind of island survival guide.

Which character do you relate to the most, and why?

CJ. She is self-deprecating and open to a fault, her love of cooking also mirrors my own.

Did any of your characters surprise you by developing in unexpected ways?

Riley’s journey from reserved to emotionally open with CJ happened much more organically than I thought it would. It turns out, with the right partner, vulnerability isn’t SOOOOO scary.

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.

Grey Goose and pineapple juice with just a splash of grenadine. It’s strong while being sweet, and pineapple juice is SO GOOD FOR YOU!

If your book had a signature dessert, what would it be?

Creme Brulee. Simple but classic, sweet with some heat from that torch!

Your characters are throwing a party—what’s the theme?

Maybe favorite lesbians from the screen? Come dressed as your favorite TV/Movie/Music video queer.

Do you outline your books in detail, or do you prefer to discover the story as you write?

I am what we refer to as a pants-er. I write by the seat of my pants. I do not outline or chapter plan.

Who are your biggest literary influences?

Obviously, I grew up loving the works of Sarah Waters, but, surprising lots of people in my life, I really really loved the writing of J.D. Robb when I was young. It’s heteronormative, but I really like what Nora Roberts did to bring action and romance together with a super flawed, but perfectly relatable main character.
