Why this book and why now?
Saving Graces is the final of the Grace Notes trilogy. I wanted to explore the character of Rosalie and imagine what it might feel like to live a regular life alongside that of your best friend, a wildly famous megastar. Throughout the first two books Rosalie makes a couple of appearances as someone the other characters turn to for advice and guidance. She’s a social worker; she’s warm, calm and wise…so what if underneath all that, she was a struggling disaster who’d given up on love? And what better than to throw in a love interest that the sensible side of her would see as completely inappropriate?
What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?
Initially this was a relatively traditional romance, with a hint of the backstory between Savannah and Rosalie. Instead as I wrote, I realised that what I really wanted to portray was that despite romantic love being incredibly celebrated in our culture (and genre!) it’s all the other kinds of love that really sustain us throughout our lives. So I wanted to write about how love exists within the queer community, how critical self-love is in order for us to show up in our romantic lives and I particularly wanted to portray the joys and complexities of queer friendships.
Would you and your main character(s) get along?
We’d either be instant best friends or drive each other nuts. We may be slightly too similar!
Do your character names have special significance or meaning?
I didn’t think so, until I realised I’d accidentally given her my own real life initials. Um…
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
Rosalie’s life can be so serious and heavy. I completely see her as having a secret addiction to The Real Housewives she’d never admit to.
What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?
The album Jane, by Brynn Marshall (for the love) Savannah Grace: The Unauthorized Biography (for the giggles) and every kitty item Lemonade could ever demand.
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
If you’re a Two Tickets reader you may have worked out by now that Rosalie once had a very romantic song written about her…
