Why this book and why now?

Everyone calls me the Grinch (and I probably am), so when my girlfriend told me in September that Christmas is coming, the first lines of Winter’s Winter popped into my head. From that point, everything was easy.

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

It was supposed to have a very different ending. Winter was going to be an awful person and at the end she’d wake up from a coma and realize she could start over with Dew.

Would you and your main character(s) get along?

Definitely. Winter would be my bestie.

Do your character names have special significance or meaning?

It’s a very cheesy book, so I tried to pick names as cheesy or as silly as possible. Winter’s full name is Winter Summers. Her mother is April Summers.

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Golden Girls. Dorothy is probably Winter’s idol. Plus it’s an 80s show and Winter loves everything from that period.

What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?

Dew’s mouth (her love interest) for obvious luscious reasons, old records and a recorder. Music is her life.

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.

A mug full of mulled wine. It’s the beverage Winter and Dew drink on their first date

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

Hit me with your best shot—it lets her feel like a rockstar, even though she’s far from one on her real life.

Meet Raluca M. Matara

My name is Raluca M. Matara, but my friends call me Ralu.

I love creating my own worlds where anything is possible, and everything is at stake. My characters are always mistreated or traumatized in some way, but they always—and I mean always—get a happy ending. I’m not aiming for realistic here because real life is already…well, I don’t have to tell you how it is. You already know. My love for fantasy started as soon as I learned how to read. The first fantasy book I remember reading, The Hobbit, changed my life. Tolkien fans can appreciate the feeling.

When I’m not writing or drawing, you can find me curled on my couch with my partner, watching our current TV series. Or maybe I’m out, sipping a coffee and watching the leaves change their colors. But if it’s hockey season, you’ll definitely find me at the ice rink, cheering my favorite team.
