Now let’s get to today’s history lesson: Grace Darling

On November 24, 1815, Grace Darling was born in Northumberland, a county in North East England. When she was a baby, her family moved into a small cottage attached to a lighthouse on Brownsman Island, one of the Farne Islands. Her father was in charge of the lighthouse.

The lighthouse wasn’t appropriately situated, so the family moved to a newer lighthouse on Longstone Island.

On September 7, 1838, Darling spied the Forfarshire, a ship in distress. She and her father went to their aid in a rowboat, since the weather was too rough for a lifeboat. While her father helped people into the rowboat, Darling held it steady.

Her father and some of the rescued crew members went back out.

News of Darling’s bravery thrust her into the spotlight as a heroine. Both she and her father were awarded the Silver Medal for Bravery. Darling received gifts, letters, and even some marriage proposals, resulting in sudden fame and wealth.

She fell ill in 1842 and succumbed to tuberculosis. She was only twenty-six years old.

To honor Grace Darling, we’re asking readers to go to the BookFinder and look up books in the following Theme category: Adventure / Survival.
