Why this book and why now?

Song of Stars draws heavily on my college experience at music conservatory. The experience of being friends with the other flutists in my studio, while also competing against them regularly, was a very strange situation to reconcile. I decided I’d like to write a book about it in a fantasy setting.

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

Originally, Song of Stars was written in second person. The experiment was fun, but my first readers had trouble engaging with the story, so I switched it to third person. I do think that writing the first draft in second person helped me focus on details I wouldn’t have included otherwise.

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Mirae would love queer animated shows like She-Ra: Princesses of Power. Sefina would enjoy true crime documentaries like I Am A Killer.

What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?

Sefina would want her lute, a religious symbol for Of-Blessed-Dreams, and Mirae.

Mirae would want an altar for Of-the-Sea, the ability to tame a horse to ride on the beach, and Sefina.

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

“Still Into You” by Paramore. It has those childhood sweetheart vibes like in the book.
