Why this book and why now?

D.J.: Time travel is something I’ve wanted to try for awhile, but it took some time (no pun intended!) to work out the logistics. We hope to offer a new audience the chance to not only fall in love with our characters, but also to learn about life in another era. It was definitely time to try something we hadn’t done before, and it was such a pleasure researching and writing the book!

Elke: Because D.J. wanted to.

Would you and your main character(s) get along?

Elke: Sure. Especially with Cory who shares my love of horses. We’d go on trail rides together, but first she’d probably replace the light that’s not working on my truck or unclog the drain in my bathroom or something. D.J. would get along better with Evelyn, who is more like her in the way she cares for hearth and home.

What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?

Elke: An axe for cutting wood to construct a shelter with. Her favorite knife to butcher whatever animal she manages to trap and kill. Waterproof matches.

One of your main characters is planning a romantic night. Tell us about it.

Elke: For a special night out Cory parks her truck in her favorite spot on what used to be her grandfather’s ranch and puts up folding chairs side by side. She gets out the cooler and hands Evelyn a drink and a sandwich she’s bought in town and grabs a beer for herself. Cory tells her phone to softly play women’s country hits and she and Evelyn picnic as the sun slowly sets.

A family of does gracefully makes their way to the water hole in front of them, and, as the dusk deepens, they see a pair of grey foxes. Evelyn scoots closer as something small scurries in the brush next to them. Cory puts her arm around her, and they both smile as a fat racoon waddles out and glares at them.

A waltz starts and Cory asks Evelyn to dance. They dip and spin as as the sun’s last rays disappear below the horizon and the stars come out. Another song begins, a slow one, and Evelyn rests her head against Cory’s shoulder as they sway. As the last notes fade Cory tilts Evelyn’s face upwards and kisses her, gently, languorously, until, breathlessly, they pull apart. Cory spreads an old quilt and some blankets on the tailgate she’s swept clean earlier, helps Evelyn up, and together they settle on the pillows, the endless Texas sky above them.

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.

Elke: Beer! Cory is nothing if not a very down-to-earth, country girl, and beer is always her beverage of choice. She prefers German beers, especially dark wheat ales like the Franziskaner Hefeweizens, but she won’t turn down a Miller or Coors either.

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

D.J.: Lady A’s “I Need You Now“, as no song better exemplifies not only the character trait that has Cory constantly helping others (a strong need to be needed), but also the fact that, whether she knows it or not yet, she very much needs the comfort and security of that certain someone to make her life stable.
