Why this book and why now?
I’ve had the ingredients of it on my mind for a while: A small town, a crime covered up, and an outsider facing multiple obstacles while trying to solve it – plus a love story, of course. I’ve been working on the Carpenter/Harding series for a long time now, and so I wanted to do something that’s more romantic suspense rather than another procedural.
Would you and your main character(s) get along?
In general, we probably would – Kelli and I like the same books and TV shows (see below)! But my MCs are usually a bit braver than me, and besides, they might not like what I put them through. In fact I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t, but I give them happy endings too. That counts, right?
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
I think Vigil would be to her liking. She’s a bit younger than me, but would have still waited a long time to see a crime drama with a sapphic relationship for the two main characters. And she would appreciate that very much.
What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Because Lisbeth goes to places she sometimes wishes she could when it comes to delivering justice.
Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.
It’s often hot in the story (I mean, the weather), and characters appreciate a chilled beer. My wife and I rarely drink it, but there’s something to be said about a nice cold one on a hot summer day, preferably with citrussy notes. I don’t think Kelli would have such specific requirements – it just needs to be cold!
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
Thunder Rolls by Garth Brooks. The lyrics don’t necessarily fit, but the vibe does. My wife made me aware of it while I was writing the book. Blown Away by Carrie Underwood would also be a good candidate. There was a clear theme to my playlist!
