Why this book and why now?
This story broiled until it was told. I’ve had it in the back of my mind for decades until one day I just sat down and said I’m going to write it. This is an #ownvoices novel, one that came about from never really being able to verbalize things that have happened. It’s reparative to reimagine.
Would you and your main character(s) get along?
Yes. Of course. We’ve had similar experiences, good and bad. There is a lot of me in Alex and although my writing is never quite exactly how it happened, I know her very well.
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
Alex might in another life binge watch the Amazing Race while eating potato chips on the couch and not feel at all bad about it at all. She might like to think that her journey had a million times more purpose and meaning than a bunch of people running around the world looking for silly things and completing tasks.
What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?
Alex’s favorite book, one she carts with her through all her journey, includes poems of Sappho. To her poetry is a bit perplexing and ancient poems, with missing sections, can be vague and need interpretation. She muses on the poetry and it is integral to keep her going. She projects the meaning of the poems and no one can tell her she is entirely incorrect. The poetry allows her to imagine and find out who she truly is. She finds herself, as well, in her travels.
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
Anything from Everything but the Girl, the Amplified Heart album. Alex would probably choose, “Missing.” Alex grew up in the 90s and is nostalgic in her twenties, where the story begins. I can see her in that first chapter driving, listening to “Missing,“ feeling nostalgic and grateful, remembering. She has her own full playlist on Spotify as well. Ask and I’ll share!
