We’ll take you through her early life and cultural influences, her impressive career achievements, and her role as an LGBTQ advocate. We’ll also reveal three lesser-known facts about this multifaceted actor.

Let’s dive in!

A Star is Born: Samira Wiley’s Early Life and Cultural Influences

Born on April 15, 1987, in Washington, D.C., Samira Wiley was destined for a life in the arts. Her parents were pastors of Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ in D.C. They’ve been called the “pillars of the LGBT religious community” since their church was the only Baptist church the area to perform same-sex unions.

At the age of 9 Wiley heard a radio commercial for a theater summer camp. She went and continued going for the next ten years. In a 2022 Guardian interview, Wiley said, “I didn’t have any access to acting, apart from what I was seeing on Nickelodeon and stuff, but I knew I wanted to be one of those kids.”

Wiley credits her parents for influencing her craft, saying this in the interview, “Absolutely, yes. Seeing my parents preach a sermon, I know that’s where I get it from. In essence, it’s getting up there and telling a story.”

Wiley attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts before earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Juilliard in 2010.

Breaking Barriers: Career Achievements and LGBTQ Advocacy

Samira Wiley’s big break came with her portrayal of the beloved character Poussey Washington on the groundbreaking Netflix series, Orange Is the New Black. Her performance earned her widespread acclaim and a devoted fan base. The show’s diverse cast and commitment to telling authentic stories resonated with audiences, particularly within the LGBTQ community.

Following her success on Orange Is the New Black, Wiley continued to break barriers with her role as Moira on the critically acclaimed Hulu series, The Handmaid’s Tale. Her powerful performance earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series in 2018.

Wiley didn’t intend to take on socially conscious roles saying those were the opportunities she had.  She said, “But now I know the power that comes with taking a role like Poussey, like Moira, like Angel, that’s what I want to do.”

Will she continue to take on those types of roles?

“Absolutely. I don’t think there’s any other choice for me, at this point. Like, I’m part of every single marginalized community. I’m Black, I’m gay, I’m a woman.” She continued, “My country hates me! So I do feel like it’s my responsibility, or it’s one that I’ve definitely accepted, to be a voice for all of my different communities.”

As an openly lesbian actor, Wiley has been a trailblazer for the LGBTQ community. She has used her platform to advocate for greater representation and equality, both on and off-screen. By sharing her personal story and experiences, she has inspired countless individuals to embrace their true selves.

In 2017, Wiley received a nomination for Out magazine’s “OUT100”.
