Why this book and why now?

Love or Hate is the hardest book I’ve ever written, but it couldn’t be more timely. It tackles the divisiveness that is ripping our world and our community apart. While writing Love or Hate, at times I was angry and at other times I was just plain sad. In the end, it was cathartic and reinforced my belief that most people are good. I think we are more alike than different, and things could be different if we would only listen to one another. Some may say I’m naive, but my hopefulness helps me get out of bed in the morning.

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

I could write an entire dissertation on how Love or Hate evolved, but I won’t go that far. I needed my beta readers more than ever for this book. My wife actually didn’t like the first draft. She knows me to well, and she felt the pain and anger coming out in my words. Through much soul searching, I was able to insert my signature humor and optimism into the story and even out the rough edges. My wife likes it now 🙂

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Ivy believes Rain needs to loosen up a bit, so she’d choose something funny like Parks and Recreation. Rain, on the other hand, would pick The West Wing.

What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?

Rain’s would be Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela. Ivy’s would be The Bible.

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book!

Ivy would serve her mom’s “special” lemonade.
