Why this book and why now?

I have been working on this book since 2021. I’ve always been a huge vampire nerd, but since the recent controversies with the vampire series that I grew up loving, even the thought of rewatching them had left a bitter taste in my mouth. I wanted to write a Vampire story that had genuinely strong female characters – not just physically strong – self confident, determined and principled. And I wanted to explore ideas of consent.

As I said, I started this in 2021, and I could still be researching Victorian vegetarian recipes, or tweaking, but I saw an advert for the Kindle Story Teller competition, so decided to give myself a deadline and see how I get on!

Would you and your main character(s) get along?

To be fair, I’m very laid back so I get on with most people. However the only one who is allowed to bite me is my cat, so if any of them tried that we’d need to have words!

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Meg would watch Lost Girl, because she likes the idea of a secret magical underworld and can relate to a main character that chooses her own path.

Morgan survived perfectly well without television when she was alive and does not see the need for one now.

Nadia would watch The New Adventures of Superman because becoming a vampire got in the way of her seeing how it ended and she loves Lois Lane.

Zoe would watch MasterChef even though she never cooks, because she likes to watch TV she doesn’t have to think about after a stressful day at work.

Aside from the obvious food and shelter, what 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?

Meg would want her cat, Henry, her mobile phone (because she needs to be able to check in on everything) and a solar powered mobile phone charger (so she doesn’t run out of battery, obvs).

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book!

Meg would choose a Bloody Mary – because – irony, but also because it has tomato and celery so it’s two of your five a day. Zoe would have a diet coke because she’s probably working later, and the others are on a very specific diet…
