Why this book and why now?

I was visiting my family back home in New England for a weekend and shared breakfast with my dad, uncles, and other family members. (There are a lot of us in our Italian family, even when it’s a small group.) We reminisced and joked about a few memories of my grandmother and how much we all missed her. That led me to think about her more when I returned home and my own memories of her. I decided that writing a book with her and my family as some of the side characters would be nice. That’s when Mafia Girl, Maybe? came to life. It took me a year to write, and by coincidence, it released now in the fall, which matches perfectly with the timing in the book. It was a wonderful way to write a fun sapphic story about two femme women and include some humorous bits about my amazing Gram.

Would you and your main character(s) get along?

I would get along with both of my characters. Stephanie, coming from a large family and loving to eat, are things I’m very familiar with, as well as her entrepreneurial spirit. You have to have that mindset if you are going to run an author business. Madison’s love of art and loathing of lamb and goat cheese are also very familiar to me. I can imagine being invited to their house for wine, good food, and fun conversation—like one of those amazing small dinner parties that people used to host in the 90s.

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Stephanie would watch The Sopranos for sure. Who doesn’t like a nice Italian family from New Jersey??? Depending on whether wine was involved, Madison would probably watch something like The Andy Warhol Diaries or The Equalizer.

What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?

Stephanie would bring olive oil, a fry pan, and matches. (Obvious reasons.) Madison would bring a book on the history of modern art, suntan lotion, and wine. Because if you are stranded somewhere, all you really need is good food, sex, and a bit of wine to keep the laughter flowing.

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

Madison would choose “Style” by Taylor Swift and most likely dance around lip-syncing to make Stephanie laugh, teasing her. She listened to it the few times they were apart, and she couldn’t deny how much she was falling for Stephanie. It gave her comfort and hope.
