Excuse Me, Sir! Memoir of a Butch
by Shaley Howard

Genre: Memoir
Why this book and why now?
This book is important, especially given the times we are living in with over 500 anti-LGBT legislative bills introduced. It’s my story about being closeted and what happens when people are scared to be their authentic selves and denied love. Speaking openly about addiction, what it means to be LGBTQ+ and closeted, suicide ideation and family dysfunction is imperative today in order to help others who suffer needlessly. The more we are able to communicate openly, with humor and empathy, the more we can find commonality in our lives and possibly the courage to live our lives openly.
Would you and your main character(s) get along?
Funny you should ask as the main character is myself. Often given the fact I was living two different lives…one closeted Shaley and one pretending to be straight, often those two “me’s” had a hard time getting along. It all worked out in the end though LOL.
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
Wonder Woman, the original with Linda Carter because she not only crushed on her for years (still do as an adult lol) but she also wanted to be her in many ways.
What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?
The Art of Racing in the Rain. It’s a story told from a dogs perspective peppered with all sorts of wisdom and spirituality. And the story itself is very exciting and constantly leaves you wanting to turn the next page to see what happens.
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
I’m Coming Out by Diana Ross because obviously in many ways, I’m coming out again. the memoir is loaded with all sorts of personal information. Or I’m Still Standing by Elton John. The book is called Excuse Me, Sir! Memoir of a Butch but the original title was actually “I’m Still Standing. Memoir of a Butch.”
