Here are Lyn Denison’s top sapphic reads of 2023:
1. The Senator’s Wife by Jen Lyon
This book just instantly clicked with me. I love the main characters, although I don’t have a sporty bone in my body, nor am I a gorgeous successful businesswoman…but we’re living vicariously here. The first love scene was beautiful, and simply emotive. And the villain? OMG! The book was well-written, well-paced and didn’t lose me for a second.
2. Caught Sleeping by Jen Lyon
Book Two continued on from where The Senator’s Wife ended and it was just as enjoyable and as riveting. It was good to see the main characters evolve, and then there were the villains… Usually I’d say ‘love to hate’ but with these villains, no love could ever be involved. Their severe comeuppance is going to be so satisfying.
3. Honey in the Marrow by Emily Waters
A beautifully drawn portrayal of two strong women, one brought to her knees by grief and guilt and the other offering her supportive arm to help her up. Something of a privilege to make the journey towards love with these two amazing characters.
4. Teaching Hope by Sienna Waters
A double whammy for me. I always like Sienna’s books and I like books set in small English villages. (This one was the setting for a previous book.) Great storyline, but it was also about a group of wonderful characters. Our main protagonists, their quirky family and friends, and a hilarious cast of kids.
5. Broken Beyond Repair by Emily Banting
Interestingly different group of characters and storyline that carried you along and didn’t sag in the middle. Apart from the Ice Queen MC, the rest of the cast of characters just stepped out of real life and into the book. And who wouldn’t love the wonderfully quirky ‘human’ Gertie?
