When the end of the year drew near, we had one question we wanted to ask book lovers the world over. What were your top 5 sapphic reads of 2023?

Luckily our readers like to share!

Here are Mardie’s top sapphic reads of 2023:

1. A Hired Blade by J. C. Rycroft

This is prequel novella so don’t go looking for complicated world building or convoluted storylines. I like the simplicity of the setting and the straight forward plot. There is a wide range of emotions to feel your way through while watching cleverly written action scenes, a burgeoning romance and everyday life in a traders’ caravan. This book particularly appealed to me because of the FMC; her chosen career, her very human self doubts but determination to do her best and the bonds she forms with those she grows close to.

2. The Blood-Born Dragon by J. C. Rycroft

This author had me hooked after reading her prequel. I wanted more of the FMC (Des) and her horse! The title gives away the presence of a dragon and that alone is a huge draw. Having ‘seen’ Des in action with her sword I wanted more of that too because I knew JC Rycroft would deliver superb action scenes. I got the action, the dragon, the friendships and a surprise serve of betrayal.

3. Sanctuary by Andi C. Buchanan

This book is just different! It’s original in so many ways that it stands out from the crowd. I was drawn in by the idea and representation of neurodiverse characters in contemporary UF. The concept for the story is intriguing and it is built around characters who kept me interested from beginning to end.

4. Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree

It’s nice to read a book that doesn’t involve the end of the world! Cosy fiction is a wonderful genre and this is a lovely example. Characters of different paranormal types coming together to help a friend – it doesn’t get better than that.

5. Tides of Magic by Andi R. Christopher

The central character of this book made it special for me. Charley puts her life on hold to go in search of her missing sister…..and then discovers she has magic! Heart warming and adventurous.
