Why this book and why now?

I LOVE disasters! A disaster heightens the intensity of everything, including emotions. Plus I’m one of those odd writers that love to do research, so I was itching to write another book that required heavy research. I could go on for days about all the fascinating things I learned, but I won’t. I will admit I used to be one of those fools who stood outside in the middle of a storm and watched for a funnel cloud. After my research, I doubt if I’ll be doing that again.

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

My plan for Through the Storms was to have two POV characters, but I soon found it to be too limiting. My original couple, Oakley and Lana, are both meteorologists, one a storm chaser and the other the local weather woman. Since I wanted my readers to experience the awe and wonder of a storm chase through the lens of an average person, Chloe and Riley entered the story. Hence, the reader now gets two romances for the price of one.

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

That’s an easy one The Weather Channel. Does that count as a TV show?

What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?

Into The Storm: Violent Tornadoes, Killer Hurricanes, and Death-Defying Adventures in Extreme Weather by Reed Timmer. This is Oakley’s favorite book because Reed Timmer is her storm chasing hero. I would have to counter Oakley with another book that I found fascinating while doing my research. What Stands in a Storm: A True Story of Love and Resilience in the Worst Superstorm in History by Kim Cross is an amazing book. It reads like a novel even though it’s nonfiction. I highly recommend it if you enjoy Through the Storms.

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

Blown Away by Carrie Underwood, and they would make sure to play the video for the song as well. I can’t say why, but once you read the book you’ll understand.

Meet Rita Potter!

Rita Potter has spent most of her life trying to figure out what makes people tick. To that end, she holds a bachelor’s degree in social work and an MA in sociology. Being an eternal optimist, she maintains that the human spirit is remarkably resilient. Her writing reflects this belief.

Although Rita’s stories are eclectic, she typically writes layered characters who are facing challenging circumstances. She draws inspiration from the quote, “The writer’s job is to get their main character up a tree, and then throw rocks at them.” Despite the heavier subject matter, Rita’s humorous banter and authentic dialogue reflect her hopeful nature.

She lives in a small town in Illinois with her wife, Terra, and their cat, Chumley, who actually runs the household.
