QUEER NEWS THAT’LL MAKE YOU SMILE

It can seem sometimes like all the news these days is bad. We won’t deny there’s a lot of troubling things going on, including a rise in hate crimes. But it’s not all terrible out there! We want to do our best to highlight good news, because while it may seem like the world is filled with hate, there are many individuals who are living their best lives with a rainbow in their heart.

This week’s good news involves Minnesota’s oldest gay bar.

Minnesota Public Radio reported that on March 22, a garbage truck collided with a utility pole in the cherished Loring Park neighborhood, which started a fire. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the resulting blaze has compelled the closure of 19 Bar, a fixture since its establishment in 1952, with no set date for reopening.

The community has rallied to provide assistance. Two GoFundMe initiatives have garnered over $31,000 collectively to aid the staff who is now out of work due to the fire. Additionally, The Saloon, another nearby gay bar, has scheduled a fundraiser for April 7th, where performers and bartenders will contribute their tips to support the employees of 19 Bar.

“The bones of the bar is still standing and strong,” 19 Bar manager Wilson said, “and that just goes to show we will come back, rebuild, new and improved.”

We hope that happens soon!
