Why this book and why now?

I’ve been a writer all my life, and (like everyone else in the world) I’ve always wanted to write a book. I was explaining to an online friend of mine that I planned to start writing when I retired, and she laughed at me. Why not now? What a concept, right?

I fumbled around with a few ideas before I decided on Alex and Lilly—two ambitious women who don’t have time for love. Put them on a Ferris wheel, have the ride break down, and they can be stuck at the top for hours. I’m not fond of amusement park rides (neither is Alex!), so having Lilly settle her down and flirt with her as a distraction seemed like a fun story to tell!

Would you and your main character(s) get along?

I would get along splendidly with both of these women. As super smart women, I would have a blast hanging out with them, a glass of wine in hand, discussing every topic under the sun. As a sapiosexual (someone attracted to intelligence), both of these women tick a lot of boxes for me. We have lots of similar interests, so we’d never get bored.

But IRL, I don’t like amusement park rides, so I’ll wait for them on solid ground. 🙂

What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?

Alex’s favorite book is Trident Code by Thomas Waite. It’s about the security of our infrastructure, and how vulnerable we are. It inspired her to study engineering and marry it to cybersecurity. She wants to save the world by keeping us all safe. Noble and nerdy!

Lilly’s favorite book used to be Harry Potter, but not anymore. That’s been canceled. Now, it’s a fantasy series called The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan (and Brandon Sanderson). It’s also her new favorite TV show. She loves the books because of how re-readable they are. She comes from a big family, and fantasy is one of the ways she likes to escape the chaos around her for something new.

One of your main characters is planning a romantic night. Tell us about it.

Berlin. Lilly would take Alex, the consummate tech nerd, to the German Museum of Technology. Alex would get lost in all the cool things there, and Lilly would have to lure her away with promises of a rooftop dinner overlooking the city and the prospects of some quality time in the hotel’s hot tub with some fancy wine. 🙂

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.

While Lilly tends toward the wine, Alex prefers a simple beer. She comes from humble beginnings, and even though she’s moving up in life, there’s nothing better than celebrating with a simple bottle in her hand and Lilly on her arm, celebrating with friends. Not everyone needs to have fancy tastes!
