Why this book and why now?
I was looking for a romance set on a sailboat, and the only ones I could find were cruise-type stories. I wanted a different kind of adventure. Classic enemies-to-lovers: you need two people who hate each other and you put them in a stressful situation where they have to work together to survive. Instant conflict. What could be more delicious than two beautiful women who despise each other lost at sea with only one hammock on board?
Would you and your main character(s) get along?
I would get along well with Sophie. She’s rational. She has a good head on her shoulders. Mostly. Vickie? At the beginning of the story, I would barely be able to tolerate her. She’s emotional and irrational. Don’t get me wrong—emotions are a good thing, but not when they make you do stupid things. (To be fair, both women do some pretty stupid things on this adventure because of emotions!) By the end of the book, Vickie’s done quite a bit of growing, so I’d be able to get along with her then. 😉
What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?
Vickie’s not much of a reader, but Sophie is a massive book lover. She’s a librarian, after all. She loves books of all kinds, but one of her favorites is Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea.” She loves the message of resilience running through the book. While she’s never had anything truly traumatic happen to her, she recognizes the need for resilience in every aspect of life. Especially as an experienced sailor, she sees her sport and her athleticism as representative of the hard work and choices one must make in life.
What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?
Is this a silly question, considering my main characters are stranded away from civilization? They have a boat, but it doesn’t do much good if they can’t find their way home!
BUT if Sophie knew she would be stranded, she would want her Kindle (which is already stuffed full of dozens of books) and her solar charger. It kind of goes without saying that you’d want books with you if you were stuck somewhere without technology, right? In addition to those two vital pieces of entertainment, she would choose to have her best friend Margo with her. Vickie’s not very good company (at least at the beginning of the book), and if you’re going to be stranded, you definitely want someone whose company you enjoy to be stranded with you.
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
For Vickie, this would highly depend on the book. She’s not a huge party person, but something small with close friends would be perfect. She likes themed parties, so the music, food, and drink would be centered around the specific book.
Since this book is about the sea, they’d have margaritas (Vickie), piña coladas (Sophie), and mojitos (Margo) with fish tacos and a seafood platter. For music, they’d have some Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffett, and Kenny Chesney. To start the party off, she’d probably pick David Gray’s “Sail Away.”
