Why this book and why now?

Authors have been hit with many challenges in the last couple of years, issues that might affect independent authors more than those with a publishing company’s backing. So when I began brainstorming an idea for a new sapphic romantic thriller, this was a perfect time to expose to the readers some of the issues we must deal with daily. To name a few, paying the bills, imposter syndrome, online attacks, book pirates, and the AI invasion. There has also been a recent transition from “lesbian” to “sapphic” for us older folks to adapt to, and they all make an appearance in the protagonist’s experience.

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

My original concept for this book was to be a suspenseful thriller, maybe even a little darker than my usual. However, when I started putting the characters onto the pages, they didn’t completely cooperate. Winter was supposed to be the prime suspect until Aspen developed a secret crush on her, transforming her into the love interest. And I guess I can’t escape my sense of humor, because it kept cropping up everywhere. Readers still tell me it comes across like a true suspense-thriller, so I’m happy about that, even with the funny tangents.

What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. Aspen is curious, smart, trying to find herself, and make a go at her own career, like the women in the story. She’s also a real romantic at heart and would do anything for her friends.

One of your main characters is planning a romantic night. Tell us about it.

Aspen is a Florida girl, while her girlfriend lives up north and has long dreamed of white sand beaches with turquoise clear water and sun. So the date would begin with a lazy walk on the beach, splashing in the water, and lying out on towels to dry while they share stories from their childhoods. Then it’s to their hotel room to shower and change for a fabulous seafood feast at the best local restaurant. Afterward, because Winter is a sci-fi nerd and Aspen wants to please her, they’re off to the latest futuristic fantasy movie at the theater, followed by champagne and other delectable desserts in their hotel room. The only question is lights on or lights off?

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

It has to be Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me,” because Winter sings that song for Aspen at Karaoke night in front of a huge conference crowd in the hotel lounge.
