Here are Diana’s top sapphic reads of 2024:
1. Tempting Olivia by Clare Ashton
Second in her Oxford series, it’s as much a love letter to the city as it is about a group of women who live there. Clare Ashton is one of the very best writers of SapphicLit and this is her best yet. Can’t wait for the third – due in early 2025.
2. The Road Ahead by Amanda Radley
Snooty bossy Arabella has fractured her leg and is stuck in Portugal, desperate to get home for Christmas. So is freelance photographer and wild child Rebecca. No planes. Reluctantly they share a hire car paid for by Arabella and driven by Rebecca. What happens over 24 gruelling bickering hours is only the prelude to what happens back in England!
3. Departure from the Script by Jae
Jae is always worth reading and this one is no exception. It’s funny (the opening paragraph sets the tone) and if you like Hollywood success/fail romances with a side of truth and piquant sauce – you’ll enjoy Amanda’s non-Valentine’s adventures.
4. In the Company of Crocodiles by Maggie Brown
The author knows her FNQ (far north Queensland) and not necessarily the touristy parts. The opening scenes are a clever nightmare as Vivian – retired and hiding from a dangerous life – is forced back into it when special agent Claire arrives in her deceptively peaceful town in search of a missing VIP. Atmospheric and scary, romantic too!
5. About Last Night by Laura Henry
Sells itself hard as “utterly hilarious, feel-good, forced proximity, lesbian rom-com” which is as puzzling as it’s nearly accurate. It is funny and the way Audrey sees off her cheating ex “Shae with an E” is a treat. As is her unlikely hots for rough gal DJ Toni. The contrast between them is an obvious recipe for romance as Audrey is a business suited CEO who would just have to be called Audrey. Great fun.
