Why this book and why now?

At a time when it feels like lesbian and sapphic stories are consistently being overlooked and under appreciated by a broader audience and the media, I just wanted to add one more little bit of lesbian joy into the world.

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

My book actually began as a screenplay after I graduated from film school in 2020. I found there was a lack of sapphic romantic comedies and wanted to write a script for something sweet, romantic, and fun that as a lesbian woman, I could personally relate to. Between 2020 and 2023, I developed a deep love for reading sapphic books and decided I wanted to tell my story in a deeper way so I made the choice to adapt my script which at the time was half finished into a novel. It was such a fulfilling and incredibly fun experience for me as a writer and I’m so proud with where the story ended up.

Would you and your main character(s) get along?

Yes, absolutely. Parker and I both get a bit scared sometimes when things get tough but like her, I’m also very passionate about whatever project I take on when I get inspired!

Do your character names have special significance or meaning?

Not particularly! I just chose names I have always loved and ones I felt read well and sounded great. I’ve also loved the concept of a traditionally ‘masculine’ name used for a female character as my own name is often shortened to George.

Did any real-life events or personal experiences influence the story?

No real life or personal experiences but the small town setting in my story is loosely based on the town I grew up in.

How does it feel to finally share this book with readers?

Terrifying but so, so exciting! As a writer, I ultimately write with the goal for my writing to be read and after spending so long with these characters in so many ways, it’s exhilarating for other people to spend time with them now too.

Which character do you relate to the most, and why?

I relate to Parker a lot. The way the death of her father really affected her decision making and how she tackles issues in her life reminds me a lot of myself after I lost my grandmother who I was really close to. At the end of the day, Parker is just scared and afraid to open up the right away in fear of losing even more than she already has and I feel myself in that same position sometimes.

If you could spend a day with one character from the book, who would it be and why?

Abigail, because I would want her to teach me how to paint!

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.

Coffee all the way! I’m a coffee addict and I passed rhat along to some of the characters in my book. What better way to celebrate than with something strong that’ll really wake you up in the morning?

If your book had a scent, what would it smell like?

Citrusy and floral with a hint of cedarwood.

Do you outline your books in detail, or do you prefer to discover the story as you write?

I start with a loose outline to give myself an idea of the bigger plot points and overarching story and then I discover a lot of the nuance and learn a lot about the story as I write.

What are you currently reading?

I’m re-reading the Love Lie by Monica McCallan in anticipation of her upcoming release, The Pining Paradox!

If you could have dinner with any author, living or dead, who would it be?

Taylor Jenkins Reid so I could ask her how she was able to write the final 30 pages of Atmosphere without crying.
