A New Day in Hawai’i

By Jo-Ann Adams

After devoting a decade to passing civil rights legislation in Hawai’i, including the recently-enacted civil unions bill, Jo-Ann pauses long enough to chronicle the journey – how a grassroots activist, with no prior legislative experience, learned how to become an effective citizen lobbyist and community organizer.

A New Day in Hawai‘i is a gripping tale of the tortuous path taken to pass the civil unions bill in Hawai‘i. Each chapter ends with “Lessons Learned” making this book the next best thing to a mentor whispering in your ear!

An attorney and political activist, she chairs the Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender Caucus and belongs to the women’s caucus of the Democratic Party of Hawai‘i. She also serves as an elected member of the Waikiki Neighborhood Board. She produces and hosts a bi-weekly talk show on local public television, which fosters compassion and encourages political activism.
