Corsets and Cognac

By Cheril N. Clarke

Recently divorced, Ashley Kobayashi is done mourning the end of her failed marriage; she is working on building a new life filled with adventure, excitement, and, most importantly, love.

As she breathes life back into hobbies she’d let slip during her years of matrimony, she also explores new paths of recreation like burlesque dancing and aerial arts. Ashley decides to take up the challenge of performing live with her former instructor to push her comfort zone boundaries. Kerry-Ann Thompson is on the cusp of fulfilling her biggest dream, opening a glamourous cabaret-style club called The Crown, where she will perform, with Ashley and a troupe of others, a whimsical performance of sensual artistry. Under the pressure of being an entrepreneur, performer, and artistic director, Kerry-Ann is determined to create a production unlike there’s ever been in Atlanta, one that brings the vibrance of her Caribbean lineage to the usually Euro-centric world of burlesque. To pull off a successful show, Ashley and Kerry-Ann must navigate increasing sexual tension, jealousy, stress, and envy, and decide if pushing the boundaries of their friendship is worth the risk of ruining it all.
