Grammar Wednesday: Word Mix-ups – Then v Than
These are two that get mixed up ALL the time. They mean very different things and can completely change the reading of a sentence and what follows.
Why do they get confused so much? The two words are homophones, meaning they sound alike but have different meanings.
Then implies time or an outcome.
Than is used for comparisons or establishing a differentiation.
EXAMPLES
Rusty, the wonder kitten, scarfed down her food and then vomited it up.
Rusty thought it was better to lounge on the cat tree than to indulge in more kitty nip.
