Why this book and why now?
I’ve actually had this one on the backburner for a while, back when I was enamored by the idea of magic schools–but from the perspective of staff members. I just so happened to write from a librarian POV. I’ve always liked the idea of vampire librarian, honestly.
And I suppose there is the theme of “complicated relationships with mothers” that I carried over from my debut. That’s one of the background issues that haunts Evan, along with their childhood trauma and detachment from the concept of family. Grief, loneliness, and difficulty letting go…I’m guilty of infusing bits of myself into my work, but those are things many of us can relate to.
But seriousness aside, I just love vampires and other supernatural elements. And how often do you get to see (adult) black vampires, witches, etc? I write the things I wish to see more of in fiction, but I also like to have fun with it.
Which is why I also like to write about black, queer characters going on fantastical adventures. Not everything has to be dead serious or struggles with racism or diversity, etc. Although I was very much enraptured by the Interview with the Vampire tv series. It’s campy, it’s fun, but also deep, flawed, and further encouraging me to write more vampire books.
What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?
I actually named Evan after Evangeline, from the Leviathan Chronicles, an audiodrama I fell in love with some years ago. That character is rather intimidating, and I can’t pronounce the name in full without thinking about her. But “Evangeline” is a pretty cool name for an immortal in general. They’ll drop the nickname in the next 80 or so years, I imagine.
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
Evan would absolutely eat up Interview with the Vampire. Black vampires? On TV? Black GAY vampires? They would be absolutely delighted.
What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?
Their Kindle, a camera, and notepad.
Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.
A bottle of my homemade ginger beer! Non-alcoholic, as I never let it sit longer than a month.
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
Bela Lugosi Is Dead – The Hunger Mix; it’s genre relevant, and Evan is still a goth at heart.
