The Yukon Quest is a 1,000 mile sled dog race that follows the historical route of the Klondike Goldrush in Alaska.
The first race was held in 1984 when 26 teams left Fairbanks. Over the next 16 days, 20 teams arrived in Whitehorse, with 6 teams having to drop out along the grueling course. Temperatures can reach -40F with 100mph winds! The race is known for excellence in canine care and for fostering the region’s tradition of travel by dog sled. This year, the race will begin on February 11 in Whitehorse.
To celebrate Yukon Quest day, we’ve selected three sapphic books that take place in Alaska.
