The art form of ballet dance began in the 15th century in Italy and France.
Always known for its pageantry, ballet began with dancers moving from one pose to another on flat feet, often wearing elaborate costumes. The Academie Royal de Danse was founded by King Louis XIV in 1661. However, it wasn’t until 1832 that Marie Taglioni performed “La Sylphide en pointe,” ushering in the era of ballet dancers wearing pointe shoes and dancing on their toes.
To celebrate Ballet Day, we’ve selected three books starring ballet dancers.
