Why this book and why now?

Ha… the timing part of this question is interesting. I wrote this book many years ago. It’s been collecting dust on my hard drive for a while. My wife was always asking me when she would be able to read my books (“s” not a mistake) and I always answered when it’s properly finished. But when she inevitably followed with when would that be I just shrugged in response. Until one day I realized she was genuinely upset about it. So I picked this one (because it’s dear to my heart) and figured it was time. And she finally got to read it.

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

The story itself has remained pretty unchanged. The most significant thing that has changed is the overall feel of it. The author who wrote it is very different from the author that finished it. At the time, I wrote it for my own cathartic experience. I grew up in a very catholic conservative environment and self acceptance was hardest part for me. The person who finished however actually owns rainbow colored rain boots.

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Top Chef because Ella is totally into cooking shows and picking up some techniques.

What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?

Ella would want Katherine (awww!) and her grand piano but good luck with that last one. Really not a portable instrument.

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.

Ella would choose a Manhattan cocktail because it’s classic but complex, much like herself. It’s her favorite drink and what she is drinking when she meets Katherine. They are both whiskey drinkers but this author is more of a tequila kind of girl.

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

“Dog Years” by Maggie Rogers. First line of the lyrics is “I count my time in dog years” it is apropos to the time they spent waiting for this party.
