Today is Mermaid Day

Mermaid Day
Today celebrates the myth and magic of mermaids!

Mermaids are at the center of many myths throughout history. Several historical figures have even recorded sightings of actual mermaids, including Christopher Columbus. He reportedly saw three mermaids while sailing near the Dominican Republic on January 9, 1493. He was disappointed that they were not as beautiful as legend would have us believe. This is probably because they were manatees. (Discovering things lots of people already knew about and claiming they were totally different things seems to be a theme with Columbus.)

According to folklore, mermaid tears turn into a gem called aquamarine. This gem is used by sailors for protection and healing. Want a fun way to celebrate mermaids? It’s a great day to watch a nostalgic movie like Splash!

Today we bring you three sapphic books with mermaids.
