Why this book and why now?
I write the books I want to read but can’t find. The paranormal novels I favor didn’t have a butch (masc-presenting), Black Sapphic protagonist who kicked a lot of ass. Joan Matthews came out of nowhere and sprang to life fully formed, so obviously her time has come.
What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?
CONSECRATED GROUND started as Joan’s story with only her POV. Leigh Phan could not be contained and, as is her way, silently claimed her space until she held half the story.
Would you and your main character(s) get along?
Nope. Joan would find me too diplomatic and wordy, too gregarious.
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
If Joan watched TV, she would love shows like LEGEND OF THE SEEKER, THE SHANNARA CHRONICLES, and MERLIN. Medieval sword and sorcery, but not modern–just enough mystery and magic to entertain, but not to remind her of her own world.
Aside from the obvious food and shelter, what 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?
Weapons (so she isn’t defenseless), wine (because what witch doesn’t love wine), and some sort of music (though the wind through the trees would suffice).
Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.
Joan would absolutely love a glass of a bold zinfandel – just enough to make her blood sing.
