Why this book and why now?

I have always wanted to rewrite fairy tales/legends as sapphic stories. When I was a girl I was very aware that there just weren’t any heroines from books who I could relate to. Last year I started with Cinderella, or, Miss Havisham Says Yes.

The Moonshine Heart is my second and it is (loosely) based on Robin Hood. Next up, sapphic Pinocchio! In all three stories, I’ve really enjoyed adding diversity and switching things around. I’ve tried to include environmental matters, as well as dealing with issues such as war, body positivity, and what it means to be a real woman.

Would you and your main character(s) get along?

I would get along very well with Rohene. She’s a stalwart young woman who has had to hide away her personality in order to fit in. She pretends to be strong but inside she struggles. When she meets Marwa the witch, all of Rohene’s walls crumble away. As a disabled author, I too have had to play many parts in order to get anywhere. Sometimes I manage it, others not.

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Rohene might choose to watch a show about fitness or sport, whereas Marawa would more likely choose a lighter show based around animals.

What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?

Rohene would always take Marwa, no question. Also she’d likely take her bow and arrows because they’re like friends to her and because they saved the world. I think her next item to bring might be something for Marwa, such as her pony, Starlight.

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.

I’d choose a special cocktail made from forest fruits, topped with a tiny branch. In the middle of the branch hangs an intricate heart woven from grasses and made by Marwa. Of course, the cocktail is concocted by magic and love.
