National Foster Care Day is an important occasion that celebrates caregivers and the system that makes foster care possible.
Foster care is a system in which children who do not have adequate parental or familial guardians are placed in a group home or with a private family who function as state-appointed guardians. This is often on a short-term basis. Foster care was not designed as a long term solution. Sadly, children ‘age out’ of the system when they turn 18. They often are left with no money and no support.
National Foster Care Day strives to bring to light the good work done by caregivers and social workers who are in it for the right reasons. The day also shines a light on what we as a society can do to give these kids the future they deserve.
Today we bring you three sapphic books with characters who have been in the foster care system.
