Three Sapphic Books For Shades Day

Shades Day
Get Your Shades On – Shades Day is Here!

Summertime is fast approaching, and what better way to celebrate than by wearing a pair of shades? But did you know that May 12th is an official day dedicated to sunglasses? That’s right, it’s Shades Day!

Origins of the Holiday

Believe it or not, sunglasses have been around for thousands of years. In fact, the ancient Inuit people wore flattened walrus ivory “glasses” to prevent snow blindness. But today’s holiday is relatively new. The Family Holiday Association (F.H.A.) created the celebration in the UK as a way to raise awareness and money for their non-profit. F.H.A. provides seaside breaks and day trips to struggling families. The charity does not receive government funding but relies on donations and fundraisers.

Why We Celebrate

Shades Day is more than just an excuse to look cool. The holiday has a deeper meaning; it is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of protecting our eyes from the harmful UV rays of the sun. According to the World Health Organization, overexposure to UV radiation can cause various eye problems such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and even cancer.

How to Celebrate Shades Day

Now that you know what today is all about, let’s talk about how you can celebrate.

Here are some ideas for celebrating Shades Day:

  • Wear your favorite pair of sunglasses and post a picture on social media with the hashtag #ShadesDay.
  • Organize a sunglasses swap with your friends or family, and exchange your favorite shades.
  • Host a picnic or BBQ with a “shades only” dress code. Encourage your guests to wear their favorite sunglasses.
  • Make a DIY sunglasses holder or case to keep your shades safe and stylish.

Remember to wear your favorite pair of shades today, and spread the word to your friends and family. Let’s help raise awareness about the importance of protecting our eyes and enjoy the summertime in style!
