Three Sapphic Books for Mother’s Day

Mother's Day
Call your mother! It’s time to celebrate her special day.

It’s Mother’s Day, the time to do something special for the incredible women in our lives. Many of us look forward to this holiday as an opportunity to express our love and gratitude to our mother figures. However, few of us know the fascinating history behind this well-loved celebration.

Origins and Significance of Mother’s Day

Celebrating motherhood is common around the globe. For example, in the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In Mexico, it is celebrated on May 10th, regardless of the day of the week.  In 1908, an American woman named Anna Jarvis desired to honor her mother, a peace activist who had passed away two years before. Jarvis began a campaign to establish Mother’s Day as a national holiday to recognize the sacrifices and hard work of all mothers. In the US, the second Sunday in May became the official day for the holiday in 1914.
