From Pass Christian to the Spotlight: Robin Roberts’ Early Life and Cultural Influences

Born on November 23, 1960, in Tuskegee, Alabama, Robin Roberts was raised in a military family that eventually settled down in Pass Christian, Mississippi.

Her mother was the first in the family to go to college at Howard University and her father, who dreamed of flying planes when he was a child, became a Tuskegee airman. In a speech at Abilene Christian University, she says she grew up with the mantra, “Discipline, determination and ‘de Lord.”

She claims her parents also taught her the importance of setting yourself up for success. Being close to power allows one to “have the ability and must do the things necessary to position yourself for great things to happen.”

Roberts’ passion for athletics led her to become an exceptional basketball player, playing for Southeastern Louisiana University. She was 1 of 3 Lady Lions to have 1,000 career rebounds and 1,000 career points. The university retired Roberts’s jersey number 21 in 2011.

It was during this time that she discovered her talent for journalism, setting the stage for her future career in broadcasting.

Her decision to share her story and relationship with partner Amber Laign has inspired countless individuals to embrace their authentic selves and has helped break down barriers for LGBTQ professionals in the media industry.

Equality Forum included Roberts in the 31 Icons of the 2015 LBGT History Month.
