Why this book and why now?

#14 was the last Carpenter/Harding book I finished pre-pandemic. After many conversations with readers and authors, I decided that I wanted the characters to be aware, but put them at a later moment in the timeline, about a year and a half later, so I wouldn’t have to go into too many details that might be triggering for some. For a series that spans over many years, I thought it was important to touch on the subject in the context of their lives.

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

Based on previous books, I had expectations about how the characters would cope with various situations, and I think the same will be true for my readers. A few surprises happen along the way.

Would you and your main character(s) get along?

As long as they’re not aware of everything I’ve done to them, sure, why not? Ellie is the easygoing one who would likely make an introvert like me feel at ease. Jordan might come off as aloof to some, but is a great friend to those who got to know her better. And she mellowed a bit with Ellie by her side for 15 books plus prequel! We’d definitely have things to talk about (books, TV, politics & travel) over the occasional drink at their usual hangout.

Do your character names have special significance or meaning?

It’s not always a conscious choice. They have to sound right to me, and good together. And these two definitely do. A confession though: I like the last names of badass women to end on -er.

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

NCIS Hawaii, because they’d appreciate some action together with a sweet sapphic storyline. But maybe also The Great British Baking Show, to relax.

One of your main characters is planning a romantic night. Tell us about it. What do they do?

They have done the romantic getaway a few times, hotel, spa, and it usually works well for them to get away from the job for a bit. But I think Ellie might want to try something new and plan a camping trip with a romantic dinner under the stars…I can see them packing up and ending up in a nice hotel anyway, but having lots of fun.

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book!

We would hold the book party at the SEVEN, everyone’s favorite hangout that is run by Jordan’s parents. And the bartender would come up with a new cocktail called #15! Think Whisky Sour with maple syrup.

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

A song I discovered a few years ago, Heart of a Woman by Johnny Reid, has the perfect lyrics to describe how Jordan feels about Ellie, right from the start. From the challenges of hunting a serial killer, to difficult relationships with her ex, and her biological mother, their love has been a sanctuary from it all.
