Why this book and why now?

I reached out to an editor inquiring about interest in my story. While working together, those stories acquired meaning and grew up to become a book. My inspiration was always to pay it forward because people—strangers, showed up for me when I needed help. I hope my book provides the validation I found in those people and that my readers see inspiration in my story to help them on their journey.

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

Many events were streamlined while others were edited out—the result of my healing so certain stories were no longer needed.

Aside from the obvious food and shelter, what 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?

A journal to write in, music to soothe her soul, and pictures to look back on special people, places, or moments. She is a thinker, highly sensitive, and sentimental!

One of your main characters is planning a romantic night. Tell us about it.

They hike through the woods leading them to a soft-sand beach where they enjoy sushi and dumplings on a picnic blanket as seals swim by so close they can see their whiskers. Brandi Carlisle is singing in the background and a woodsy scent from a nearby beach fire mixes with the cool salty air surrounding them. Wrapped in a beach blanket, they see a whale breach the water in the distance against a pink sky. They nudge even closer, filling any empty crevices between them, two women consumed by peace and love.

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book!

My main character slides onto the stool at the luncheonette counter, and Elvis is playing on the jukebox. She’s sipping a thick vanilla milkshake through a wide straw because it’s reminiscent of another time in her life and the sweet drink is indulgent enough to feel celebratory.

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

I’m Coming Out by Diana Ross. It’s self-explanatory!
